Gulbara Tolomushova was born in Frunze (now Bishkek) Kyrgyzstan, the daughter of a film editor mother who frequently travelled to Moscow for work. She studied cinematography in Moscow, graduating from the Russian State Film Institute in 1989. Since then, she has directed numerous television films and written about the medium for both internet and print publications. She has also been a jury member at a number of film festivals. As a television director, she specializes in documentaries on Kyrghyz cinema, art and culture. She is a member of the International Federation of Film Critics and the Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema. From 2004 to 2010, she was Vice President of the Kyrgyz Filmmakers' Union. He also worked as a researcher at the Aitmatov Institute for Literature and Foreign Languages of the Kyrgyz Academy of Sciences.
