Andrei Andreevich Tarkovsky (b. August 7, 1970) is a Russian film director and documentary filmmaker, the son of the famous filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky and Larisa Tarkovskaya Tarkovskaya. He is known for his work in preserving and promoting his father's artistic legacy, as well as for making documentary films exploring his father's life and work.
Although he originally studied physics, history and archaeology at the University of Florence, Andrei A. Tarkovsky was profoundly influenced by the artistic environment in which he grew up. His father exposed him as a child to classical music, medieval and Renaissance art, and taught him to appreciate the beauty and depth of art. This informal education had a lasting impact on his intellectual and artistic formation.
In 1996, Andrei A. Tarkovsky made his first documentary film about his father. Subsequently, he continued to work in filmmaking, focusing on documentaries exploring the life and work of Andrei Tarkovsky.
His best-known project is the documentary Andrei Tarkovsky. A Cinema Prayer (2019), which premiered at the Venice Film Festival. The film is constructed entirely from archival material - rare interviews, audio snippets, home footage and excerpts from Tarkovsky's films - all accompanied by the voice of the director himself, reflecting on his own creation, faith, art and the meaning of existence.
In 2024, he released a new documentary titled Andrei Rublev. Vospominaniya o filme (Andrei Rublev. Memories of the Film), which offers an in-depth exploration of the 1966 masterpiece Andrei Rublev, considered one of the most influential works of world cinema. The documentary analyzes the film's creative process, highlighting its philosophical and artistic significance, as well as the influence of icon painter Andrei Rublev on Tarkovsky's work.
After his father's death in 1986, Andrei A. Tarkovsky became the custodian of his father's archive, based in the family home in Florence, Italy. The archive contains over 110,000 materials - video and audio recordings, photographs, manuscripts and scripts - and is protected by the Italian Ministry of Culture as cultural heritage of exceptional value. The house is currently being converted into a museum dedicated to the life and work of Andrei Tarkovsky.
Andrei A. Tarkovsky believes that art should be profound and reflect on the meaning of life. He emphasizes the importance of rediscovering his father's artistic perspective, which emphasized spirituality, poetry and the responsibility of the artist. Through his documentaries, he seeks to bring these values back to the forefront and give the public a deeper understanding of Andrei Tarkovsky's work.
Andrei A. Tarkovsky is a key figure in preserving and promoting his father's cinematic legacy. As a documentary filmmaker and curator of the Andrei Tarkovsky Archive, he is helping to maintain the relevance and influence of one of the most important figures in world cinema.
