Sinopsis

"The Book of Amos" (2012) by director Amos Gitai is a poetic short film that forms part of the international omnibus project Words with Gods (2014), which explores themes of faith, spirituality, and religion from different cultural and religious perspectives.

Inspired by the biblical prophet Amos, the film is not a conventional historical depiction but a visual and philosophical meditation on justice, prophecy, and divine truth. Gitai portrays Amos as a humble, rural figure—a shepherd called to deliver harsh truths to a corrupt society.

Through minimalist cinematography, layered soundscapes, and evocative imagery, Gitai weaves together fragments of biblical text and modern visuals. The result is a cinematic reflection on the timeless relevance of Amos’s message: a call to righteousness, a condemnation of religious hypocrisy, and a demand for social justice.

Rather than following a traditional narrative arc, the film operates more like a visual psalm or a moving prayer, blending poetry, ritual, and protest into a short yet deeply resonant experience.

The Book of Amos is a lyrical interpretation of ancient scripture, filtered through the lens of a modern filmmaker who sees the prophet not as a relic of the past, but as a voice urgently relevant to our present.
