"The Healing" (original title: Isceljenje) is a 2014 Serbian drama directed by Ivan Jović, with a screenplay by Monja Jović. The film delves into profound themes of forgiveness, reconciliation, and the enduring scars left by war.

Set in the secluded wilderness of Eastern Serbia, the story follows an Orthodox monk who has retreated into hermitage, seeking solace from a painful past marked by the loss of his wife and child during wartime. His contemplative solitude is disrupted by the arrival of a Muslim grandfather and his gravely ill grandson. The grandfather believes that the monk's prayers can heal the boy. As their interactions unfold, the monk confronts the harrowing revelation that the boy's father was responsible for his family's death. This encounter forces the monk to grapple with the possibility of forgiveness and the challenge of bridging the chasm between his suffering and his faith.

The film employs a minimalist narrative style, emphasizing visual storytelling and the natural sounds of the environment. The barren landscapes of Eastern Serbia serve as a poignant backdrop, mirroring the internal desolation and turmoil of the characters. A recurring motif is the monk's care for a dead tree, symbolizing the paradox of nurturing hope amidst despair.

"The Healing" has garnered critical acclaim and several awards, including:

  • Golden Sun Award for Best Balkan Film at the 13th Cinedays Festival of European Film in Skopje.
  • Best Film and Best Screenplay at the 4th BaNeFF Festival of Balkan Films in Sweden.
  • Signis Award at the Religion Today Film Festival in Trento, Italy.
  • The film was also featured in the Spectrum section at the Cottbus Film Festival in Germany and received the Jury Prize at the FEST in Belgrade.

"The Healing" stands as a poignant exploration of the human capacity for forgiveness and the arduous journey toward inner peace in the aftermath of unimaginable loss.
